1. Funkes not racing race 1: "Funkes tore their new spinnaker in half during race one, so rather than lose two races they came back to the harbor to fetch the old spinnaker. In itself it does not sound like much but the Charlie course is about 4 nautical miles out so it takes about an hour in 28 knots of wind to get back."
"According to Peter the new spinnaker is scrapped, it ripped completely in half as well as tearing into the two adjoining panels. Since then they have been sailing successfully with the old red and white spinnaker."
It doesn't appear to have affected their speed, we near the middle of the fleet just look out for the old red and white bag instead of the new grey and red one!" "In that first race we (RSA8471) were a bit too far back to finish within the time limit and that was not helped by us capsizing on the last run while we were leading Rudolph, who also had a number of capsizes in the first race, to the leeward mark for the last time. The boat was very unstable in the gusts and sharp chop and I just got washed off the boat and swung around the back. Lost my brand new glasses and beanie in the process!"
2. Rudi sinking his boat: "Rudolph and Ferdie apparently were on port and just made it past a starboard boat when they realized, too late that there was another starboard boat just behind the first and they could not avoid it. The bow of the other boat went through their boats bow just behind the nose , "in the first 20%" as per the sailing instructions, just where the number must be stuck on. The hole is quite big, enough to see the second hole in their spinnaker chute. The boat cannot be repaired here and Rudolph was lucky to arrange to borrow Dave Hudsons "New" boat 8788 for the rest of the event. They spent the second race day measuring and were unable to make the start of the third race."
3. Albie not racing first few races: "Albrecht has been racing but had difficulties in the first race due to the high wind and gusty conditions. They did not finish and decided to go back early. On the second day they were held up launching and did not make it to the start on time. Again on course Charlie, 4 miles out. They also apparently capsized on their way out. The launching is a bit of a nightmare. Everyone moves forward to the ramp together and then puts their boats down to hoist the main. This means that even if you have a parking near the ramp, as we have, you cannot move until they are all launched. It is getting a bit better but the only solution is to launch at 10 for the race at 13h00."
4. Kyle getting a 25th and not racing some other races: " Kyles two DNC's were on the first day when it was really blowing. They were out there for the start but capsized a few times and raced but decided to go back early after trailing the fleet. Their 25th was brilliant in the first race yesterday. For us very difficult conditions, just too light to get going well but heavy enough that if you couldn't read the wind you just sucked. It is normally cloudy and with very disturbed chop so we had difficulty reading the wind but Kyle seemed to get it right. "
5. you oaks forgetting your GPS device!! (i assume that's why the DPI) : "Yes we realized almost half way to the start that we had left our tracker in the office. We had to weigh up missing a start and having out tracker or racing and adding 5 points. The last seemed like a better option. Yesterday we just sucked from start to finish. I am not sure why, but part of it is that we are just unable to point as high as the rest and still keep up our speed. It normally takes about 1-2 minutes after the start before you get rolled by the boat to windward of you, from then on you are in dirty wind. I think that part of the problem is that we get hooked on trying to follow another boat and that draws you into pointing so high that you are continually pinching. That is just slow! I am sure that if we just sailed our own race we would be further up the fleet. That is our personal goal to finish in the top 50%, quite a tough ask now but we are going to try. Wednesday should be better wind and that favors us a bit."
