2010 Highveld Championships - PSC (28-29 Aug 2010)-THIS WEEKEND!

Local

505 sailors – ATTENTION!

The next regatta is the Highveld Champs next week (28th-29th August) at PSC. The NOR is attached to this Email. There are several boats available if you need to borrow a boat, but you need to phone around and find them yourself. At the moment there are approximately 8 boats who are able to attend. Please make an effort and get hold of an Exco member if you want to sail but are unable to locate a boat.

This is your chance to ask the worlds participants what they learnt and get some fresh “Go Fast” tips from them.

See you on the water this weekend!

505 BP Trophy Results - Freestate Champs

Local

Good wind! Disappointing turnout!
The Freestate Championships/505 BP Trophy held this last weekend (8-9th May) at Aeolians was an ideal opportunity to get in some last minute racing before the cold claws of winter take their hold.

Unfortunately the turnout was rather poor in all three classes but the teams who attended used the good wind and had some very exciting and close racing. There were only 4 505 teams there, 7 Oppies and 2 Dabbies!

Alexander and Warwick Ham showed that the results of their training was starting to pay off and dominated the event, while Rudolph and Ferdinand Holm tried as hard as they could, in Albrechts second boat (Ramkat), to keep up the pressure but finished a close second. Albrecht and Willem Buhrmann were given one bullet when, on the last reach of the last race in steadily building breeze, the two front boats took each other on in a duel over who would take down their spinnakers last!

Western Cape Championships 2010 - Race Report

Local

The SAS Western Cape Dinghy Championships was held in Saldanha over the long weekend 24th – 27th April 2010. Usually this regatta takes place over the Easter Weekend, but this year due to logistical issues the regatta had to be postponed by about three weeks. Not only did this affect the turnout of the upcountry boats but it also meant the weather was noticeably cooler than previous years. The 505 fleet was also significantly smaller this year ( 7 boats) due to the Duffin Trophy regatta, a promotional regatta held in PE over the Easter weekend, in preparation for the South African Worlds bid presentation to be given in Denmark later this year. The Gauteng fleet which normally supports the WC Champs in large numbers by travelling “en masse” down to Saldanha, had used up their reserves of leave and money to support the PE regatta and only three Gauteng boats made their way down to Saldanha. The Cape 505 fleet was also smaller than last year with David and Dale Rae celebrating an addition to the family and Paul Willcox having lent his boat to the Robinsons and not being able to sail.

Due to the public holiday being on a Tuesday this year the long weekend allowed 4 days of sailing. The weather reports promised building wind over the four days with 16-24 knots predicted for Tuesday, the last day of sailing. A varied fleet of some 256 boats were entered for the regatta and this included more than 60 Catamarans of all shapes and sizes as well as a very strong fleet of 21 Dabbies and 40 Oppies and about 20 420’s, plus a number of Sonnets, Lasers and various other boats. The organisers did a sterling job of arranging the regatta and thankfully put the 505 fleet in with the dinghies instead of with the Cats.
