Ian Pinnell Sailing 505 at MAC, 26-27 Nov 2011

International

Grant Ballentyne let us know that Ian Pinnell will be sailing a 505 in the MAC regatta this coming weekend in Milnerton, Cape Town. Ian, a past World Champion will be sailing with Dave Shilton on his new boat together with the rest of the Cape 505's.
Anyone wishing to join in the MAC regatta on the weekend should contact Grant Ballentyne for a charter boat, or make arrangements to get down to Cape Town ASAP.

The regatta documents can be found on the Minerton Aquatic Club website.

This is your opportunity to sail against a past World Champion and get some tips on how he does it. Come on guys, who is going to try and show Pinnell a clean transom on the weekend? The water might be a bit small and with plenty of Oppies around, things could get interesting.

Lets support this event and have the 505's there in force.

Assymmetric Spinnaker 505 - What do you think?

International

Have a look at this concept modification to the 505 to make the boat simpler, cheaper, and possibly faster, while also being easier to sail. Take a look at it and keep an open mind before you comment.

Thanks to Graeme and Rob for letting us know.
Add your comments to the forum and lets get some discussion going. Pity there's no-one at Hamilton Island to contribute to the discussion!

Hamilton Island Worlds - Message from Earle

International

The next 505 World Championships in Hamilton Island, Australia, are now only 3 months away, March 20th to April 1st, 2011.
During the Denmark worlds several of the South African competitors made tentative arrangements for charter boats at Hamilton Island and were intending to compete. We are now getting closer to the event and need to guage support so we can let the Australian committee know how many to expect. Please look at your calendar and determine if you are going to attend. The Hamilton Worlds website is http://www.505worlds.com/
We will also be using this opportunity to submit our bid for the South African 505 Worlds in 2015, so it is an important event at which we need strong representation.
Please let one of the Exco members (Thomas, Peter, Kobus, Mark, Robert, Scott, Warwick) know if you are committed to attend by the 15th January 2011.

See below a message from Earle Alexander.

The Denmark Worlds Container - Progress

International

Excerpts from a recent Email from El Presidento - Peter

"The ship is arriving on Monday the 17th in the afternoon.. 5 days behind schedule. I have been promised by Schenker that all documentation will be in order and that there should not be any delay...

...The idea is to have the boats in JHB City deep next weekend. I hope that this will be the case and everything has been done from our side to facilitate the process. The rest is up to the other parties involved."

How can we improve the standard of South African 505 Sailing? Have you got any ideas?
Please raise them!!!

I know how hard the 505 worlds are these days

International

Well done guys, I know how hard the 505 worlds are these day's ,and you can honestly say that the top 30 places are most likely decided even before the event has taken place.THERE IS REAL QUALITY IN THE TOP END OF THE 505 WORLDS FLEET THESE DAYS.
The coverage, it must be said, was spectacular. I don't think that there is any other class that has this type of coverage, in fact I know it. We were able to follow each race blow by blow, just amazing, and we could share the magic moment when Peter and Thomas where lying 4th, the excitement was real and then the shock when we where told that it was canned.
We also saw a lot of Rudolph and Ferdi in action on their Blueslang!!!, as well as the other guys at the start. Some coaching required there!
For me it was great, as it has been a difficult period in my personal life and having to suddenly deal with health related issues, it provided me with something to lift my spirits. Hopefully I will get a clean bill of health and I will be able to get back on with my life again.
So is there any one in South Africa who can break into the elite bunch from 30 upwards? I think the answer is YES! If so what do we need to do and how best can we help each other to get there? From what I can see, this needs to happen before we are going to get a Worlds back here again in a hurry. We need some stature in this fleet and that means getting a few competitive boats up there. It would certainly be my own goal and for that I would need a committed sailing partner and a well thought out boat designed around us both, not to forget the most important ingredient of all, humility. It ain't going to be easy but it has to be done.
Tony M.
