Ranking system to be implemented
The SA 505 Class Exco is in the process of implementing a member ranking system. All paid-up members will be ranked according to official SA 505 calendar events.
505 Exco approves WC Champs travel allowance
At it´s monthly meeting on 27 Feb 08, the SA 505 Class Association exco approved a travel allowance of R400.00 per boat travelling to the Western Cape Championships over easter, 21 - 24 March 2008.
Ballot on Carbon Spars
A recent Email from our international secretary Peter Roos reads:
Good morning, gentlemen and ladies
I am pleased to be able to release the results of the recent ballot concerning carbon spinnaker poles and booms.
The ballots have been recorded and approved by two members of the IEC as required.
The overall results of the ballot were:
For 168 Against 116
The motion to allow the use of carbon booms and poles is therefore carried. The appropriate wording will be introduced into the current rules of the class.

Good company is, well you should know, a lot of 505’s well sailed! Seven 505's in the top 14 is well sailed!
I enjoyed Thomas’ report on this years’ RTI and would like to add my impressions and interpretations of the event as well as the lessons learnt from it.
Have you recently broken a mast?
The class currently has 3 M2 masts in stock, fully rigged by Holger Jess to the World Champions specs. These masts have just been landed from Germany and are brand new. Have a look in the classified section, the full specification of the M2 masts are given.
The M2 masts are a lot stiffer laterally (sideways), yet still very flexible fore and aft and are used by the majority of teams in the top 20.
If there are any M5 bolts on your boat, you would not be doing anything wrong by replacing them with M6, especially if it saves you a mast. It is also good practice to regularly check your rigging to ensure that you have no failures while on the water.

This year’s Round the Island Race was a remarkable one. Sunday, the 3rd of February, dawned with not a breath of wind in the air. Amongst the 505 sailors there was some nervousness as to what the day would bring. Would it be a long day with an average speed of 2 knots…. or a day with record breaking conditions as experienced in 2007?

I would appreciate it if you check with colleagues from other fleets to ensure that every boat owner has access to the ballot, even in other national fleets.
