505’s sailing in Theewaterskloof Points Series (5-6 December)

Local

The 505 fleet in Cape Town is shrugging off the global financial crisis and growing steadily. They recently took part in the Theewaterskloof points series. Sean Ballantyne submitted this race report.

The good news is that we made our class with five boats, one up from last year. The bad news is that at no time were all five boats on the course at the same time. The five boats were made up of Paul Wilcox, Ruaan De Hart, Grant Ballantyne and Sean Ballantyne, and Dudley Isaacs down from Knysna.

Footage was taken from the stable start boat and shows racing scenes from start to finish.

The whale is not on but you are guaranteed to see yourself, the rain, wind, waves and all other competitors. Those who were not there can get an idea of what they missed.

Funke Brothers win 505 Nationals in Mosselbay

Reports

The 2009 505 National Sailing Championships were held in Mosselbay from the 25th to the 27th of September. A total of 12 boats made it to the event with the fleet being made up of top sailors, amongst others the 2009 Lipton Cup Champion Helmsman David Rae and the 2008 505 National Champions Kyle Klaas and Robert von Gruenewaldt.

Several youth members sailed in the event and enjoyed themselves in the fantastic conditions sailing a great boat. Ryan Pentolfe, Alex Ham, Henko Holtzhausen and Eddie Forster showed that they could adapt equally to light or stormy conditions. We need more of this youthful enthusiasm in the 505 class.

On the registration and measurement the wind was howling offshore making conditions very tricky near the slipway. Conditions during the regatta ranged from light wind and sunny skies on the first day to rain and squalls of over 20 knots on the last day. This venue boasts a rich sea life including whales, dolphins, seals and of course sharks in a beautiful bay with ideal sailing conditions.

Van Nimwegen regatta report

Van Nimwegen Regatta at Aeolians, Vaal Dam

Although the "wind gods" did not have much in store for the seven 505ers on the weekend of 5 and 6 September, our bridge officer, Cor Langhout deserves all praise for making the best of a bad case by wasting no time, setting courses quickly and starting us. In this way he succeeded in getting four races in on the Saturday, making the best use of the little wind there was. Thank you, Cor, you made our weekend!

Reply to Peter Funke's letter regarding the Van Nimwegen Regatta

Local

To the president of the South African 505 Association.
Sir, I read the following on our 505 webpage and request that my comments on this important issue, as attached to each item, should be published on our
webpage:

This follows comments in a letter from the skipper of RSA 8481 regarding the Van Nimwegen Regatta, in which RSA 8481 retired from the regatta.

Van Nimwegen results amended

Local

Following an inspection of the RSA 8481 mainsail before the 2009 Nationals, it was found that the top batten was not in compliance with the class rules. Before the start of the National event the top batten pocket was repositioned in order to comply with the rules. An enquiry from the class measurer, about the status of the mainsail during the previous event, the van Nimwegen regatta, was raised. The skipper of RSA 8481 replied as follows and the van Nimwegen regatta results were corrected.
