Vote at the AGM
Dear Members,
There have been some discrepancies with the vote at the nationals and this is your Exco's comment on it. Please note that revised dates for the Nationals will be posted.
2008 Nationals report - Warwick Ham
505 Nationals - Henley Midmar Yacht Club
There were 4 father/son teams taking part in this year’s 505 nationals, (The Milln’s, Ham’s, Hogg’s, and Arthur’s) and a couple of potential family teams which we want to see on the water more often. (Holzhausen’s, Rogotzki’s, what about the Quarmby’s, the Holm’s and of course the Funke’s, just waiting for Thomas to return) There are also several youth teams and of course there is the Klaas family which suddenly seems to be quite dominant in the 505 class. What is their secret? Is it in the coffee or is it in the Jaffels?

2008 505 Nationals report - Peter Funke
In his report on the 505 Nationals at HMYC Peter Funke concludes with one of the fundamental secrets of top performance.
"Nationals 2008 saw some great sailing and extreme competition with good close quarter racing at times. In a fleet of this nature it is very important to optimise boat handling skills. From my side the biggest challenge was to get my head outside the boat and to concentrate on the sailing and tactics at hand, especially with the conditions that we saw at Midmar this year."

2008 505 Nationals Report - Robert von Gruenewaldt
"Both Kyle and I would say that the biggest factor that contributed to our performance at the nationals was the fact that we didn’t sail with our “heads in the boat”."
This is the view of Robert von Gruenewaldt, the National Champion Crew aboard BRT.

Kyle and Robert are the 2008 505 South African National Champions
After 8 exciting races in cold but reasonably strong wind conditions, Kyle Klaas and Robert von Gruenewaldt proved too quick to catch at this years Nationals held at Henley Midmar.
Racing throughout the fleet was competitive and several races within the race were evident, with one boat capsizing on the committee boat in an effort to pip their competitors to the finish.
Have a look at the full results in the results section.
The 505 class wishes to thank Henley Midmar Yacht Club for hosting this well run event, and our race officer Hemraj for getting in 8 good races in spite of the fluky wind conditions early on. We would like to take this opportunity to thank our sponsors: BP, Canon, Distell and MTN for making this event possible, and a special thank you to Albrecht for donating an aluminium rudder for the lucky draw prize.
International AGM agenda
See below the agenda for the AGM to be held at the world championships in Italy.
Nationals Pre Measurement
The following measurements will be checked at the Nationals at Midmar on the 24th September 2008.
We will be concentrating on: Boat weighing, Sails, Mast & Boom bands, Mast position, and Centeboard fit in case.
If you have sails which have not yet been measured please ensure your sails are measured before Nationals.
Nationals pre-measurement in Gauteng will be taking place as follows:
Albrecht is available for sail measurement on the weekends at PSC. Give him a ring to make sure what day he is at PSC and bring your sails to the club.
Since Graeme has left we need to find another measurer in the Cape or in Natal. Any volunteers? Those in either of these provinces who have unmeasured sails can measure at Midmar on Wed 24th Sept.
Boat weighing and Mast/Boom/Centreboard measurements will take place until 21h00 on 24th Sept 2008 at Midmar.
Be prepared!
Kyle and Robert are 2008 Highveld Champs
The Highveld Champs held this weekend at PSC were a great success with 12 boats sailing. Kyle and Robert took the honours easily from Peter Funke and Carl Wlotzka.
With this turnout we look forward to a bumper Nationals at Midmar in September.
Some photos are up in the gallery courtesy of Rene von Gruenewaldt and you can see the complete results in the results section.
