I spoke to some of the Americans this morning and they said that it was peaking at 33knots during yesterday's second race. And according to the GPS tracking systems that we have on board, we were doing around 18knots of boat speed down wind. From my experience I can tell you that this is scary sh*t.
Evert felt better today and took up the crewing position. The first start of the first race we were doing really well. It was around 12 knots of breeze and we stayed with Pinnell and Hamlin for most of the beat. Later in the race we fell back as the wind strengthened. By the end of the first race it was up to around 20 knots. We picked up some problems with our main sheet as the outer sheath ripped, exposing the inner core. This is of course an absolute disaster, as I was not able to dump the main because the sheath bunches up and does not go through the guide of the cleat.
We managed to finish the race like this and then got a knife from a support boat and tried to cut the sheath off. I manged to cut myself in the process.. not good!
The second race was in around 18 building to 23 knots. We rounded the first mark right behind Pinnell but slowly lost out more and more to the fleet as the race progressed and the wind was increasing.
The hardest thing for me at the moment is to figure out when to switch gears in these water rats and how much to rake etc..
I will try to go out tomorrow with one of the guys that came third in this event (Howie Hamlin or Ian Mitchell). He will show me exactly how and when to switch gears.
I luckily have a day off tomorrow and can recover. My eyes are totally blood shot from this water and the guys in the street probably think this guy is on drugs??
If you really want to keep up to date, or for all those guys that can't sleep in the evening you can watch the races live online while we are sailing! Have a beer in your hand and shout at me if I am going in the wrong direction. We have GPS's on board and positions are shown online in real time exactly like in the Americas Cup racing.
Cheers for know.
