Ewert has a slight back injury and Peter sailed with another crew Mike Jew.
Typical wind pattern 15 knots in the morning strenthening to 22-25knots in the afternoon.
Boat setup is critical in these conditions.
Read on!
Today was slightly different. Evert hurt his back and decided to stay at home. I felt like racing so I found a keen crew by the name of Mike Jew.
We started off in about 15 knots in first row. We were able to hold the guys off for about 100m metres untill we were sucked in. We were slighlty light with Mike only weighing 78kg. Most of the other crews here are enormous!!!
We sailed around the course really quickly, but had no fantastic finish.
The second race Started in around 22knots and by the end of the race it was up to around 26knots. We managed to sail the race without a capsize. The current really rips here, when it goes out it flows at around 3 knots and this is then against the wind pushing up the chop to a really steep and sharp wave of around 1.5m.
The sailing was really fun though and very strenuous. I will see if my team mate is feeling better tomorrow otherwise I will just sail with Mike again.
Gear and Other:
The new shooting pole system seems to work but are giving problems to some of the competitors. Howie Hamlin broke his launcher, where it goes out of the pole.
The setting up of the boats in these conditions is very difficult. Some of the boats go low and fast with other going a little higher. The problem with going low is if one does not have the weight on the wire to hold it then it becomes very difficult as the wind is blowing too much. Most of the boats are sailing with slightly more open leeches and raked very far back. the boards are very narrow being some 430sq inches.(very very narrow!!!) (That is 277 cm2 or 1.4m long by an average width of only 200mm! - Ed)
More tomorrow.

Peter Funke
