While crewing on my own boat (Kyrwood 505 RSA8520) at the Nationals in Midmar 2008, I picked up on a number of setup issues on the boat which soon after became a much larger than anticipated calibration and setup project!
For example, at the nationals I noticed that the port and starboard jib sheeting setup was not equal - both inboard / outboard and fore / aft. This is confusing and a waste of time as one needs to compensate and adjust after each tack.
This observation prompted a general hull measurement exercise that led to a number of other hull symmetry discoveries and subsequent corrections.
The result is a more balanced hull and a symmetric setup allowing us to focus on the racing while having peace of mind over the equipment.
The boat should always be treated as a unit, but separating the work into four manageable parts allows you to improve the boat while not taking it off the water for too long. Sailing the boat should always be your first priority.
Please feel free to make comments. I'm particularly interested in feedback from the Rondar owners as some details will differ between the different manufacturers.
