On the weekend of the 21-22 February was the MAC Dingy Points Series held at False Bay Yacht Club down in Simons Town. With close to a hundred boats in all entered it was going to be a great event. Unfortunately only three 5s made it as injuries and broken boats stopped the other guys.
Grant Ballantyne, Sean Ballantyne and the newest member of the 505 fleet down in the Cape, Nick Pratt and his crew Stewart sailing their boat for the first time, were the boats who made it to the regatta, making for some good competition. On the Saturday afternoon racing started at 14:30 and the breeze had come up to 15 knots with a lot of wind chop on the water and hardly any swell. The first race of the event went to Grant hands down as the other two boats had a few problems during the race. While waiting for the second race of the day to start, Sean, Sailing on Mrs Applebee, broke the shackle holding his Starboard sidestay and almost brought the rig down. Luckily the mast stayed in one piece but there was a serious bend in it putting him out of the regatta.
Two more races were sailed on the Saturday, leaving Grant and Nick to fight it out, but on the day Grant came out on top taking both.
On the Sunday racing started at 10h30 with near perfect breeze of 10-15 knots. The first race went to Nick with Grant hot on his tail, which made for some very close racing. In the next two races Aquarius come out on top sealing first place for the regatta.
All in all it was a great event and we would like to thank the Milnerton Aquatic Club (MAC) for organising the regatta.

We really envy your conditions - 10 knots is a foreign concept in Gauteng right now, let alone 15! We are now going down to Sterkfontein this weekend in search for something decent, but even that seems (according to windguru.com) like a lost case, predicting only 3 to 5! Trust your boat and mast is OK - let me know if you need anything - we'll be carrying spare masts etc. down to Saldanha just in case... Looking forward to Saldanha and this time will be in 505, not Fireball! Rudolph RSA8520: Denmark 2010 |
