There have been some discrepancies with the vote at the nationals and this is your Exco's comment on it. Please note that revised dates for the Nationals will be posted.
Thank you for attending the National Championships this year. It was an
excellent event and we look forward to seeing you at all of the other
exciting events that we have lined up on the calendar for 2008/2009. We
would like to bring to your attention the fact that the members of EXCO had
erroneously put the date and venue for the 2009 Nationals to a vote at the
AGM. There is nothing wrong with voting on suggestions for a National
Championship at the AGM, but in this instance this was misunderstood at the
AGM to be a vote for the 2009 Nationals, which could, depending on
attendance at the next worlds be held in April 2009, September 2009 or in
April 2010 or not at all during the 2009-2010 season. Unfortunately the date
chosen by the vote, had already been booked long before the present season
by the EXCO for the WC Champs in the Cape. It is against the protocol of the
EXCO to change the current calendar in order to accommodate additional
events for the 2008-2009 season, as members plan far in advance to attend events on specific dates.The EXCO takes note of the wishes of the
505 sailors and will incorporate this in the planning of the calendar for
the 2009-2010 season. We would like to assure you that a date and venue for
the 2009 Nationals will be found and that in future we will welcome your
suggestions and inputs for future events.
Several conflicting requirements must be met when planning for the
nationals: (Not in any particular order)
- Rotation of venues between the three provinces where 5 or more boats are
actively sailing
- Number and competitiveness of boats likely to attend the nationals
(Remember we want to have as many as possible and the strongest possible
fleet sailing the Nationals)
- The Nationals should not, if possible, unfairly discriminate against teams
who will, or have just, attended a worlds.
- The ability, willingness and facilities of the proposed clubs to host a
high quality national event.
- The SAS requirements for National championships events.
