The M2 masts are a lot stiffer laterally (sideways), yet still very flexible fore and aft and are used by the majority of teams in the top 20.
If there are any M5 bolts on your boat, you would not be doing anything wrong by replacing them with M6, especially if it saves you a mast. It is also good practice to regularly check your rigging to ensure that you have no failures while on the water.

A) Graeme snapped a mast two weeks ago because the bolts on his forestay sheared. I remember Stefan and Dudley had a similar problem a few years ago. He has recommended that those with Kyrwoods should consider upgrading the forestay bolts from M5 to M6.
