On Saturday morning, the 26th of January 2008, eight 505’s met at Rietvlei Dam to race the first race on the 2008 calendar. Tony introduced Dylan Le Roux as a crew, a talented and successful young Laser-sailor. His regular crew Karl has moved to Britain. From all of us here in SA, all the best for you Karl, we hope to meet you somewhere on the water again. Albrecht also gave one member out of his talent-smithy, Peter Schon, a chance to compete in racing. Warwick used the race to teach Tilja Holm some 505 skippering skills, Bronwen collared Tim Gibbons as a new crew, and Andrew Arthur couldn’t find a crew so he sailed on his own. All you guys welcome into our fleet, we want to see you on the water regulary now! Also seen on the busy Rietvlei dam was the Italian Stallion, drifting in a coffin. And this time, there was no pretty woman lying in it together with him. So Mark obviously needs some re-animation after his National-disappointments. We missed Craig and his repaired boat, Kobus and his son, Terrence, who needed a crew and Mike, who missed a great marketing opportunity.
The 4 races on Saturday were sailed in light to middle conditions, the two on Sunday in light conditions. “Conditions” actually means typical Rietvlei-wind with lots of surprises. But the biggest challenge was to get to the first start in time, just 30 minutes after the end of the skippers-meeting. So some of the 505s at the end of the queue at the ramps struggled a bit to get to the start on time. This remained the only mistake of the committee, the rest of the races turned out to be proper races.

Thanks to PSC for organising this regatta again and thanks to the kitchen for the catering, Even Rudolph managed to survive the coal in his Hamburger.
On the sailing side, the top 4 boats were close together all the time, with lot`s of position changes at the top. The group put lot`s of pressure on Thomas and Peter, which will force them to train even harder to remain (at the top) the best SA-505. In the end Hans and Alan tied on points and won on the count back and so had their head just in front. Kyle and Robert showed with two wins, that we shouldn`t forget about them. On balance I would say: Some new kids on the block and challenging races at the front, we should keep this high spirit and growth for 2008!
