So coming third in the first race in a regatta means you have to write the report. A few months back I thought it a good idea, as, hell Im a long way off. Turns out you change places, skipper and boat and … voila! … im writing the report. Six boats (5’s) took the short trip to VLC for their annual event. Where were the rest? Even no VLC 5’s arrived. VLC is renowned for light airs and shifty conditions that make the crew feel more like a jack in the box. Bruised knees, shins and the occasional “DUNK” being the order of the day. Hey I’d rather be doing this than figuring out those 90 degree shifts that plague the skipper. I remember on race being hit by a huge shift, I was dunked, skip managed to scramble the boat in a 180 degree bear off just saving the capsize to weather. Skip and I both thought “how embarrassing!” Then we looked around and noticed that the two leaders had capsized! We were now the lead boat! From zero to hero! High Five!

Any way some good race management saw that we got in six races for the weekend in some fair breeze. The five fleet racing was good and competitive, especially in the first three quarters of the race. Boats would regularly change places making it very tough. Those that kept their concentration and crew work up then started to inch away toward the end of the race.

Funke/Funke and Klaas/Becker were always tight together with Klaas/Biagio and Holm/Ham keeping them all very honest. The father and son team, Team Holthausen showed good speed and keep improving, just wait till Henko gains a few pounds!

All in all a great VLC Cup. Well done to Team Funke. Moving from the back of the boat to the front for the weekend was a great change and to crew for a good skipper always a great honor. Needless to say my now middle aged bones and muscles needed a good soak on Sunday night! Click here for the results.
