The 2012 NSRI charity regatta attracted a fair fleet of 7 505s. Amongst the teams was Jared Miller with his recently refurbished boat "Sensation". The boat looks stunning and it is excellent to see her on the water again. Well done Jared. Another team worth mentioning was the all female combination of Bronwen Klaas and Amber van Niekerk (soon to be Klaas). They also sailed extremely well and finished all of the races, well done!!!
On Saturday, racing got off to an early start. As expected the racing was close and everyone was in with a chance to win it. In the first 3 races the top teams often switched position. At the end of the day the positions were close, Klaas/v Gruenewaldt 5 pts, Funke/Funke 5 pts and Gibbons/Ham 7 pts. This meant that the regatta would have to be decided on Sunday and so it was.
Sunday dawned with a light Pretoria breeze filling the air. The committee got racing underway nice and early and a long course was scheduled. The first beat was a drag race with Klaas/v Gruenewaldt, Gibbons/Ham and Funke/Funke leading the way. The wind switched and changed and on the first run Klaas/v Gruenewaldt pulled away from Funke/Funke who in turn found a wind that Gibbons/Ham did not have. The fleet spread out and in true PSC fashion, one gust between the top 2 boats and the rest of the fleet made it very difficult to catch up. With 1,2 battling it out, 3rd place was up for grabs and what a big contest it turned out to be. Holm/Buhrman made a run for it but Biagio/Stevenson managed to hold them off to earn a well deserved 3rd. With that the racing was over as the wind died and the committee decided that enough was enough. Final positions were thus, Klaas/v Gruenewaldt, Funke/Funke, Gibbons/Ham, Holm/Buhrman, Biagio/Stevenson, Klaas/van Niekerk and Miller/Arthur.
We have many good events to look forward to this season and this year! The next event is the RTIR, then an attempt at the 9 hour at Midmar on 25 Feb. Thereafter we are sailing our provincials at Aeolians on 24/25 March and then the Western Cape champs over Easter in Saldanha. If you are interested in taking part in the World Championships in France, then get into contact with the class Exco to ensure that all efforts can be coordinated.
See you on the water.
