Friday morning started off with a wind forecast for strong southerly winds, building throughout the day. Three races were completed and the competition was good with some very tight racing and some spectacular planes and wipe outs on the course. Experience and agility dominated the racing with the Funke brothers being fortunate to bag three bullets followed by A Ham/W Ham, Kyle Klaas/Robert von Gruenewaldt and Albrecht Holm/Dietmar Holm.
Saturday dawned with a forecast for less wind. One race was sailed early and won by light wind specialists Klaas/von Gruenewaldt while Funkes came in second and Hams in third. After the first race the wind dropped to zero and teams bobbed around on the ocean for 2 hours before the breeze swung and shifted to NE. On Saturday afternoon 3 races were completed of which the Funkes won two and the Hams one. At the end of day two it seemed as if the regatta was settled. A huge attempt was made to comply with SAS regulations, in terms of finishers but unfortunately the wind strength picked up so that not all entrants could finish two races.
On Sunday 3 relatively light wind races were sailed and this time around the Hams dominated winning all three, followed by the Funkes in second and B Klaas/Holtzhausen, Holms and K Klaas/von Gruenewaldt in third, respectively.
The final results saw the Funkes win the 505 Class National Championships for a third time in a row, followed by Ham/Ham and K Klaas/ von Gruenewaldt in third. Sailing offshore proved to be very challenging for all members of the class and at the AGM it was decided that in future the class should move the nationals to ‘easier’ venues. The class does however still maintain that it is important to support all its members in all regions of SA and will continue to hold events in all provinces. The growth of the class is important and it is the continued aim to maintain and grow numbers so that we can maintain our status as being biggest performance two man trapeze dinghy in South Africa.
A big thank you goes to Rob and Sandy Samways for running an excellent event as well as to Len Heard from ZYC for hosting a tremendous regatta.
