Earlier in the week Peter Funke (South African 505 Association president) made a presentation to host the 505 World Championship in Port Elizabeth in 2013 (next year it will be in Australia and in 2012 in France). Presentations were also made to host this event in 2013 in New York, as well as in Barbados. The Barbados government sent one of their senators as well as the commodore of the yacht club in Barbados specially to do Denmark for this presentation.
08 August,
Earlier in the week Peter Funke (South African 505 Association president) made a presentation to host the 505 World Championship in Port Elizabeth in 2013 (next year it will be in Australia and in 2012 in France). Presentations were also made to host this event in 2013 in New York, as well as in Barbados. The Barbados government sent one of their senators as well as the commodore of the yacht club in Barbados specially to do Denmark for this presentation.
It was decided that the event will be in Barbados in 2013.
During the presentation made by the Barbados delegation they showed a photograph of David Laing (well known pathologist and president at the yacht club where I sail) doing some sort of traditional Caribbean dance going bent over backwards underneath a horizontal bar. This photograph was taken earlier this year when David and Anthony Parker (another sailor from the yacht club where I sail) sailed in an event in Barbados.
I believe this must have swung the vote in favor of Barbados…
Hopefully soon after 2013 South Africa will get the chance to host the 505 World Championship again.
The 2010 505 World Championship ended yesterday. Under the circumstances, having to sail with another boat, Rudolph and I did reasonably well. We managed to get a 25’th position in one of the races on Tuesday and ended in overall 50’th position. The Funke brothers ended in 36’th position, their best score was an 8’th position. Plattner/Alerie ended 30’th, Klaas/Von Grünewaldt 65’th, Ham/Ham 77’th and Holm/Buhrmann in 105’th. The event was won by a German orthopaedic surgeon, Wolfgang Hunger and his crew Julien Kleiner. The event was completely dominated by the Germans.
The South African team’s boats and all equipment have ben packed into the container and is ready to be shipped back to South Africa.
The last Vuvuzela went to Wera, the three year old niece of Johan and Erika Heander, who camped next to us. We spent many evenings telling them stories of South Africa and listening to their stories about life in Sweden.
I am on the moment on the airport in Copenhagen, waiting for my flight back to Amsterdam, from where I will fly to South Africa. I am looking forward to get back home to my family and normal everyday life in George.
I wish to thank everyone who sent messages and comments on my emails, as well as all the people I have met during the last (almost) 3 weeks, who made this a truly memorable experience.
If you are interested to try sailing out (especially on a 505) you are welcome to contact me
Kind regards,
Ferdinand
