The Pre Worlds ended yesterday with some interesting changes in the final results. The Funke Brothers moved up to position number 14 (they managed to get a 7th position in race 6). Rudolph and I moved up to 17. Plattner/Alerie moved up to 20. Klaas/Von Grünewaldt to 21 (they managed an excellent 5th position in race 5). Holm/Buhrmann moved up to 28th and the Ham father/son team ended in position 34 (Alexander Ham is the helmsman, he is only 16 years old)!
For the full results go to www.505sapworldchampionship2010.com. You will also find live footage and tracking of the boats as they race during the Worlds regatta.
Although it should be noted that this was only the Pre Worlds regatta, and that a number of the boats did not race yesterday, the results achieved by all the South African teams were very good. Racing took place in very light wind (less than 5 knots).
The weather is now busy changing. The wind forecast for tomorrow is 20 knots. This means the first day of the Worlds regatta might be very exciting, especially seen that approximately 130 boats have now been registered.
The rest of today we are spending making last minute adjustments to Geelslang and ensuring that everything on the boat is in good order. I have a concern about the pintels (connecting the rudder to the transom of the boat). These tend to get metal fatigue and break off in high winds. Rudolph however said I have nothing to be concerned about, he is holding onto the tiller, not me...
We also helped our Swedish neighbours (camping next to us) Johan and Erika Heander to set up a control system for the spinnaker on their boat.
Johan is the helmsman and Erika the crew on their boat. This is a rather unusual mixed gender combination for the 505, as you need someone with a bit more weight and strength as crew (usually the man) and someone with brains as helms(wo)man (Johan, nothing implied against you)...
There is a number of mixed gender teams as well as female only teams taking part in this event. The 505 can be set up such that it can be successfully and competitively sailed by both smaller and heavier teams, making it a widely popular boat especially here in Europe.
The 7th position in the Pre Worlds regatta was taken by the young German chick and her gorilla I have mentioned in one of my previous emails...
Kind regards,
Ferdinand Holm
