505s test Port Elizabeth as a World Championship venue!

The verdict...
PE offers an excellent package, world class sailing conditions, with plenty of wind and warm(ish) water, friendly people, a wide range of accommodation, excellent club facilities well suited to handling an event of this stature and a committment from Algoa Bay Yacht Club to host a memorable event. The 2010 505 Duffin Trophy was sailed over the Easter weekend, offshore at Port Elizabeth, South Africa. The event was sailed in preparation for the forthcoming bid to host the 505 World Championships in PE, South Africa, in 2013. Some excellent video footage both on the water and from a helicopter and superb organisation from Algoa Bay Yacht Club, the South African 505 Class is confident that this venue can live up to the high expectations of the international 505 fleet and perform as an excellent world championship host city and yacht club.

6 races were sailed over the 3 days in ideal sailing conditions, with the wind ranging anywhere between 12 to 30 knots and relatively warm water conditions. Conditions where favourable with the wind coming predominantly out of the South West, and the course was purposely set quite close to shore with the top mark within spitting distance from the Shark Rock pier, which in turn gave the beach front off Hobie Beach some superb spectator value. The current national champions, Peter and Thomas Funke dominated the racing with 5 first and 1 second position with the team of Klaas and von Gruenewaldt coming home in second place. Third was the father and son combination of Warwick and Alexander Ham while the fourth position went to Dudley Isaacs and Ferdi Holm on the Fluid Yacht’s entry while 505 stalwart, Albrecht Holm and Willie Buhrmann took 5th position. The youngsters Eddie Foster and Scott Quarmby finished 6th with the Ballentyne boats, Aquarius and Mrs Applebee, bringing in 7th and 8th position, respectively.

The 505 Class Association would like to thank ABYC for the effort that they put into the event and the excellent rescue and racing organisation. We look forward to proposing and presenting Port Elizabeth, South Africa as the venue for the 2013 505 World Championships, at the next 505 World's to be held in Denmark in July 2010.
