This month:
1. 2010 Nationals – 20-22nd March, Sterkfontein. Entry, NOR & SI issued.
2. 2010 Duffin Trophy – 2-4th April, ABYC, PE
3. Worlds Denmark - Participants, Sponsorship, Shipping, Charter boats.
4. New 505 Class measurers appointed.
1. 2010 Nationals – 20-22nd March, Sterkfontein Dam.
The 505 national event is to be held at Sterkfontein this year in keeping with our rotation policy and has been selected centrally to encourage all sailors to attend. The Exco is organising the event in conjunction with Aeolians club and Brian Sutherland has agreed to do the bridge for us this year with Dave Kitchen on rescue 1. Thanks to Thomas for taking on the mammoth task of sorting out the approval of the NOR and SI and these can be found attached to your email or in the downloads section of the website http://www.rsa505.org.za/downloads.html. The venue promises excellent sailing conditions however accommodation places are almost all booked out. Please contact Sterkfontein nature conservation directly for bookings or cancellations, or contact “The Caterpillar & Catfish” for additional accommodation nearby at reasonable rates. Camping is available R 60pn unpowered and R120pn powered site.
We already have committed support from the KZN, Cape and the Northvaal fleets and we are pushing for more than 20 boats this year in an effort to build up a competitive fleet for our own 505 Worlds in SOUTH AFRICA in 2013. Early entries are encouraged and the entry form is attached with the 505 class association account details for EFT payment of your entry fee of R350. This event also counts a lot in the 2010 rankings for the next years Worlds in Australia. So arrive prepared and expect some stiff competition from a number of hot new teams entering the class and raising the level of competition to new heights.
In spite of a potential big prize sponsorship deal falling through we have several generous sponsorships for the 2010 505 Nationals. All fuel for the bridge and rescue boats is sponsored as are the event prizes. In addition a new BM jib has been donated as a lucky draw prize available to all participants. The class wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the sponsors who are supporting South African 505 sailing in this way. The program includes an opening night bring and braai with the Exco sponsoring the braai fires. Sunday night dinner, screening of the 2009 USA worlds video and AGM at the “Caterpillar & Catfish” hall and plenty of wild daily prizes are on the cards.

2. The Duffin trophy – 2-4 April at ABYC in Port Elizabeth is ON!.
The event is being hosted by ABYC and the NOR will be distributed once approved by SAS. This is a new event on our calendar with the main focus being on marketing 505 sailing both in SOUTH AFRICA and to the rest of the international 505 sailing community. The first race is scheduled to start at 14h30 on Friday 2nd April and the last race will start before 15h00 on Sunday 4th to give everyone chance to travel home safely. On Saturday the events will be filmed by a professional film crew and this will include filming of the days racing from a helicopter sponsored by ABYC, in an effort to promote 505 sailing in PE for the 2013 SOUTH AFRICAN 505 Worlds. The promotional video will be made available to all participants and will form part of the South African bid presentation at the 2010 International 505 AGM in Denmark. We encourage all sailors to participate in this event and support the local growth in this internationally competitive class.

3. 2010 Worlds, Aarhus, Denmark, 24 Jul – 5 Aug 2010.
The deadline for the container deposit has come and gone and to date 4 teams have committed to the Denmark Worlds and are acceptable in terms of the 2008-2009 ranking list for selection. They are: Thomas & Peter, Kyle and Robert, Warwick & Alexander, Albrecht & Eddie. There are some teams who are committed to the Denmark Worlds but have not yet paid their container deposit. The Exco met early in Feb to discuss further arrangements and decided to extend the deadline to accommodate additional teams who still want to go to Denmark. The shipping cost estimate, covering the items not included by the Denmark organising committee sponsorship deal, amount to about R7000 per person based on 5 boats in the container. Our President has been in negotiation with a local potential sponsor and final submission of team profiles was completed late last week. With this sponsorship in place the shipping cost reduces to approximately R1300 per person for 5 boats and less if additional boats attend. With the possibility of 2 new boats being imported in the Denmark container the Exco placed the limit on the number of teams that can attend at 8 boats. Obviously if there is overwhelming support we will procure sponsorship for additional containers from Denmark. If you are planning on attending you have until the 28th February to pay your R2500 container deposit and secure your place.
Additional potential sponsorship deals for the whole South African contingent are in negotiation and we await finalisation of these discussions eagerly.
Several offers for charter boats are available to those interested. There is a deal with the manufacturers in Singapore which would cost Euro 11800 for a new boat (without sails) and Euro 11000 for a 2nd hand chartered boat after the worlds. Charter only for the worlds will cost you Euro 1500 but you need to take your own sails along. We are currently negotiating a reduction in the price of new or chartered boats if the dolly and cover are excluded. The results of this will be announced shortly. Several people have expressed interest in the import of new boats and the Exco members involved will be in contact with those who have committed.

4. The new 505 class measurers proposed at the 2009 505 AGM in Mossel Bay have been approved by SAS. We congratulate Kyle Klaas, Grant Ballantyne and Eddie Forster on their appointment as 505 Class Measurers in training. Their appointment is subject to a period of training and mentoring from the existing class measurer Albrecht, who will hand over to the new measurers officially once the training period is completed.
The new calendar for the 2010-2011 season is in preparation and nearing completion and suggestions for events are encouraged from all members. Please forward these to your Exco or fleet captain. (Fleet captains: Northvaal – Robert v Gruenewaldt, KZN – Steve Hegerström, Cape - Sean Ballantyne)
See you on the water
